We've been here a week now. You can check out some pics here and tonight's pics here.
Day 7 was big so I didn't get a chance to write until now. We went into MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) for a few hours in the day and also checked out some of the area around there before we went and saw Ange at her work.
That night we went to Fat Cat in Greenwich Village and saw the Andy Hunter Sextet. It was an amazing gig featuring -
Andy Hunter - trombone
Alex Sipiagin - trumpet/flugel
Jason Marshall - bari sax
Dave Kikoski - fender rhodes
Boris Kozlov - double bass (he was playing Charles Mingus' bass)
Danny Fischer - drums (Danny is from Melbourne originally)
Fat Cat is an amazing venue....kinda trashy but it only costs $3 to get in and has a heap of pool tables, ping pong tables and some other kind of table that I've never seen before that they play some sort of sport on. They have live music there all of the time and a heap of couches near where the band plays. We played ping pong for about an hour after Andy Hunters gig and then watched a little bit of the jam that Stacy Dillard was leading. Made it home by about 4am.
Slept in a bit for Day 8 and then cleaned up our mess in Matt and Ange's lounge room. Did all of our washing and just recovered from the day/night before.
Tonight we went to a gig at the Care Fusion Jazz Festival which started yesterday. It was in a nice theatre at a venue called Symphony Space. The band was a put together band called "The Jazz Gallery All-stars" and featured -
Claudia Acuña - vox
Roy Hargrove - trumpet
Ambrose Akinmusire -trumpet
Miguel Zenón - alto sax
Lage Lund - guitar
Gerald Clayton - piano
Ben Williams - double bass
Pedro Martinez - percussion
Kendrick Scott - drums
It was a great gig. They played in different configurations and mostly played original tunes. Had a great time.
Now I should go to bed - heading off early - big day planned but I'll write about that more later.
cheers,
shane.
